Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection of the peridontal tissues that surround and support your teeth. This is a common dental disorder that can have some serious effects. Gum disease accounts for a majority of tooth loss in adults. At Macadam Dental, Dr. Kevin Morich and Dr. Jodi Morich, want to help you save your natural teeth.

Do you think you have gum disease? The signs are easy to spot, look for red, inflamed gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing. It is not normal to bleed when flossing, it is a sign of infected gums. We can help.

Signs of Gum disease include:

•  gums that bleed easily.
•  gums that are red, swollen or tender.
•  gums that begun to recede from your teeth.
•  bad breath or taste that does not seem to go away.
•  your permanent teeth are feeling loose or shifting.
•  your bite has changed, your teeth are not fitting together like they did.
•  partial dentures are not fitting correctly.

Gum disease happens when the same bacteria that causes tooth decay has reached the gum line. The bacteria thrives in plaque, and plaque can rest at the bottom of your teeth and go below the gum line. This live bacteria then eats away at the bond between your tooth and gum tissue.

Have you heard our dentists discuss gum pockets? Normal gum pockets are within 3 mm, when it exceeds this, you have gum or peridontal disease, meaning the bacteria is working to separate your teeth from the gums. Without the treatment of a dental cleaning or a deep cleaning, and continuous maintenance, gum disease will progress and eventually weaken the bonds that hold your teeth in place.

Gum disease is not permanently treated, but the effects can be reversed and it can be maintained. Dr. Kevin Morich and Dr. Jodi Morich can help keep it under control. Their plan may include educating you on proper oral hygiene and scheduling regular visits with our hygienist. Some patients may need to be seen more frequently.

We are happy to answer any questions you have about gum disease and how to care for bleeding gums when brushing or flossing. Contact our Portland, OR office at: 971-337-3111
