Macadam Dental knows that getting yourself to come into the office can be daunting. Dental phobia and anxiety are very real and can be quite debilitating. We cannot stress the importance of your visits enough, however, so we urge you to come in. If you need a procedure done, but find yourself putting it off and finding a way out of it every single time, perhaps sedation dentistry is right for you. It can help you to relieve some of your fear and anxiety and calm your nerves while getting the important work done.

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the use of various anesthetics to calm you and allow you to more easily undergo a dental procedure (or several). There are different varieties available for everything from a light sedative to a sleeping agent.

Nitrous Oxide

One of the most commonly used sedatives is called nitrous oxide. This sedative is more commonly known as “laughing gas.” This is a safe gas that is pumped (combined with oxygen, of course) into a small mask worn over your nose while our dentist works on your mouth. It causes a state of relaxation. Some patients just report feeling calm while others report a tingling feeling throughout their body. Some others simply report feeling heavy or lightheadedness. Overall, once it is working, you will feel relaxed. Once the mask comes off, the effects begin wearing off. This means that you are back to your old self in a very short period. It also means that you are safe to drive yourself home after your procedure.

Conscious Sedation

Conscious sedation, or oral sedation, is a deeper level of sedation. Using this method, you take the medication orally before your procedure under the guidance of one of our knowledgeable and caring dental assistants. This will put you into a deeper state of relaxation that does not wear off as easily. This means that you will need a ride home from our offices, and should probably take the rest of the day off work or other activities to gently let it out of your system and to give you time to simply relax.

Benefits of Sedation

Sedation is a great advantage that we can offer to those who are stricken with dental related anxiety or a phobia of dentists. This can come from many different things, but often from a previous trauma associated with a dentist or orthodontist. This gives those that would otherwise avoid the dentist entirely an option that allows them to relax and complete any necessary work.

Macadam Dental cares deeply about not only keeping your mouth healthy and strong but also about ensuring that you are comfortable and happy here. We don't want you to be afraid to come in for a routine cleaning, but if you are, do not fret; we can help! If you think that sedation dentistry may help you, find out more information today and set up an appointment.
The first step towards a beautiful, healthy smile is to schedule an appointment.
